Public Education
Educational Events
The Fire and Life Safety Division conducts a wide range of public education events throughout the year. From school visits to talks at community events, the City of Boca Raton Fire Rescue Services takes pride in bringing up to date fire and life safety education to our community.
The following is a list of our most popular educational offerings. If you would like more information about a particular class, event, or have a fire / life safety question regarding something not on the list you can contact us at 561-982-4030.
School Visits
In 2015 The Boca Raton Fire Rescue Services Department conducted fire safety talks to over 16,000 students throughout the city. These fire safety lessons were taught in both public and private schools. Our primary outreach was to children from Pre-K to 5th grade.
These talks are designed to provide age-appropriate fire safety information to the group being taught, including children with special needs. To request a school visit contact the Fire and Life Safety Division at 561-982-4030.
Fire Station Tours
For an up-close look at what a day in the life of a firefighter is like your scout troop, home school group, or civic group can tour one of our fire stations. During the tour your group will learn about the roles and responsibilities of each member of the fire crew, home and work fire safety lessons, and the answer to the number one question we’re asked: why does the fire truck show up on medical calls? Fire Station tours can be arranged through the Fire and Life Safety Division by calling 561-982-4030.
Community and Civic Organizations
If your Civic Group, Homeowners Association, or Community Group would benefit from having one of our Life Safety Educators speak at your event you can contact the Fire and Life Safety Division to request a speaker.
If there is a specific topic that your group would like us to discuss, please include that information when you place your request. To request a speaker contact the Fire and Life Safety Division at 561-982-4030.
Fire Extinguisher Training
Fire extinguishers are one of the most common pieces of firefighting equipment. They are located in all schools, office buildings, shopping centers, and even in most of our homes. Although they are a part of our everyday life very few people have had the need to use one.
This class combines a classroom component that teaches how a fire extinguisher works and what type of fire extinguisher should be used with a hands-on live fire exercise to ensure the student also learns the mechanics of how to properly operate the extinguisher. For additional information contact the Fire and Life Safety Division at 561-982-4030.
Fire Drills
The Fire and Life Safety Division works with businesses and schools throughout the city to ensure that in the event of a fire emergency all occupants are able to exit quickly and safely. Our fire inspectors meet with building managers and school officials to review their emergency plans and give suggestions if needed. Our inspectors can monitor a fire drill and also explain what to expect when fire crews arrive. For additional information contact the Fire and Life Safety Division at 561-982-4030.
CPR and First Aid Training
The City of Boca Raton Fire Rescue Services is pleased to be able to offer CPR courses to our community and health care providers. These classes have proven time and again that they can and do save lives. The City of Boca Raton Fire Rescue Services offers American Heart Association CPR Heartsaver/AED ($30.00 fee), CPR-BLS for Healthcare Providers ($45.00 fee), and Heartsaver First Aid Certification Classes. The classes are held at The City of Boca Raton Fire Rescue Services Headquarters located at 6500 Congress Ave on the second floor. In an effort to ensure that individuals who sign up for classes attend, our department requires that your registration fee is paid up front.
Please note that class size is limited and requires you to register for a class using our online system. If you show up and are not registered, you will be denied the course that day. Also, if you register for the wrong class (i.e. you enrolled in Heartsaver and needed Healthcare Provider), you will receive certification for the class you registered for only!
For more information, contact the CPR Coordinator at (561) 982-4070.
Fall Prevention for Older Adults
Taught by one of our fire inspectors, the goal of this 1 to 1 ½ hour class is to reduce the number of preventable falls in our older population. By doing this we will reduce the emergency calls for fall injuries and the reduced independence that older adults face as the result of fall injuries.
This class is designed to allow audience participation and feedback. This class also offers a home fire safety component to provide a well rounded educational experience for the attendees. It is the goal of the Boca Raton Fire Rescue Services to reduce the number of falls and fire related injuries through education and a healthy lifestyle modification. For additional information contact the Fire and Life Safety Division at 561-982-4030.
High-Rise Fire Safety
This educational talk is designed for condo associations and homeowner’s associations residing in high-rise buildings. This talk is given by one of our fire inspectors and will cover the unique conditions that can arise in a high-rise fire situation. In most cases the fire escape procedure is the same as for a single-family home: get out and stay out!
Sometimes, however, it’s safest to stay in the building, separating yourself from the effects of the fire and wait to be rescued. The inspector will explain the various fire protection systems in place in your building and how they work together to provide a fire safe environment for you to live. For additional information, contact the Fire and Life Safety Division at 561-982-4030.
