Hydrant Flushing

hydrants

Every 6 months the City of Boca Raton's Utility Services Department's staff performs an aggressive 2 week system-flushing program. This program entails changing the normal water disinfection process and the opening of fire hydrants around the City to allow the water to flow through the distribution system pipes. This program is in addition to localized daily hydrant flushing and annual fire hydrant flow testing.

The aggressive flushing program along with the daily hydrant flushing is an integral part of the City's Utility Services Department ongoing effort to deliver the safest and highest quality water possible and maintain the integrity of our water distribution system. Flushing the water distribution system accomplishes the following:

  • Flushes sediments from mainline pipes increasing water quality
  • Identifies weaknesses in the water distribution system
  • Provides a check for closed valves and weak flows in mainlines
  • Verifies the proper operation of fire hydrants and valves

Home Maintenance

The same philosophy of water line preventative maintenance is one that you should use in your own home.  Your home's water heater should be drained and flushed at least once a year to keep it working efficiently land to protect the quality of water inside your home.  Also, if you go out of town and there is no water use in your home for a week or more, when you return it is always a good idea to run all your faucets for a minute before using the water.  Running your water ensures that any stagnant water that may have developed in your pipes while you were away is flushed out.
