False Contradictions: MLK and Malcolm X

Tuesday, February 16, 2021

Paying special attention to the role they played in the South Carolina civil rights movement, this talk will examine the lives, activism, and rhetoric of Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It will challenge the notion that the alternative options for black racial advancement the two leaders embodied were inherently oppositional, and position their activism within the longer civil rights movement that began in the late nineteenth century. Enrollment required. A link to the virtual meeting will be provided upon enrollment.

Presenter: Candace Cunningham is an Assistant Professor of History at Florida Atlantic University. She earned her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina. Her research is on the 20th century African American experience with a special emphasis on civil rights, education, gender, and the South. She is currently working on a manuscript about African American teachers who were in the civil rights movement.
