[ARCHIVED] City of Boca Raton Takes Action to Help Reduce Flood Insurance Rates for Property Owners

The City has enrolled in the National Flood Insurance Program's (NFIP) Community Rating System (CRS), a voluntary incentive program that recognizes and encourages community floodplain management activities.

"The City is participating NFIP and CRS programs to help save lives, prevent property damage and reduce the cost of flood insurance," commented Keith Carney, Senior Officer-Floodplain Manager for the City. "We encourage all residents and business owners in our community to participate and have a better understanding of how to protect themselves and their properties from flood damage."

As part of the CRS program, a Public Information Committee was created to provide information about flood hazard awareness and motivate actions to reduce flood damage, encourage flood insurance coverage and protect the natural functions of floodplains. The committee is composed of City staff members and key community stakeholders representing insurance, banking, property management and real estate professions.

The Public Information Committee will be accepting a proclamation from Mayor Scott Singer proclaiming October as Flood Protection and Prevention Month at the October 9 City Council Workshop. As part of the ongoing effort to provide information and resources about flood prevention and protection, all Utility Services customers will be receiving a brochure in their paper bills, and the brochure will also be available at City Hall, Spanish River and Downtown libraries and the Building Administration office.
