City of Boca Raton Leader Named Building Official of the Year

John Cosmo Building Official of the Year

BOCA RATON, FL – December 30, 2019 – Boca Raton Chief Building Official John Cosmo was recently named the 2019 Building Official of the Year by the Code Officials Educational Association. The Association, founded in 1977 as the Broward Building Officials, and based in Broward County, annually selects and recognizes one building code enforcement official for the distinguished award.

Recipients are those who have furthered the cause of protecting lives, property and the safety of first responders in the built environment within Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach Counties. Their demonstrated professional abilities and contributions to the profession are recognizable and commendable.

“To be selected as Building Official of the Year by 42 of your peers from other cities in South Florida is a great honor,” explained Cosmo. “I have always coached and mentored the staff in the building department to think outside the box when trying to solve problems. I owe part of my success to my team, they are outstanding. Hopefully, their excellent customer service makes the lives of residents just a little easier.”

The City ‘s Building Department issues nearly 10,000 permits a year and performs about 84,000 inspections a year.

“When you’re issuing as many permits as our City does, you want a building official like John Cosmo who is experienced, knowledgeable and respected by his peers and staff,” added Bandon Schaad, Development Services Director. “The City, the residents and the business all benefit from his expertise, so we’re proud that he’s been recognized.”

Cosmo started as an electrical apprentice in 1990 and worked his way from Master Electrician to Electrical Inspector and eventually, Chief Electrical Inspector for Collier County, one of the largest building departments in Florida. In March of 2017, Cosmo joined the City of Boca Raton as a Building Official and currently serves on the Building Code Advisory Board of Palm Beach County.
