Gumbo Limbo Maintenance FAQs
- What Maintenance is being conducted?
- All of the Gumbo Limbo buildings – Nature Center, Classroom, Lab, and restrooms will be tented and fumigated. Our wooden buildings are unfortunately infested with wood destroying insects (termites and ants) and the only way to preserve our buildings and prevent future damage is by fumigating them.
- Why does it take so long?
- The tenting process itself is a three-day process. We will be closed to the public for the entire week (Dec 12-16) to allow time for prep and cleanup. As you can imagine, there will be significant preparation before the tents fall to ensure that all of our animals, plants, exhibits and such are protected during this very necessary process.
- How will this impact turtles and other marine animals in the nature center?
- All of our animals in affected areas, including the patients in our sea turtle rehabilitation facility, will be temporarily relocated. There will be no interruption to their care during this time.
- The aquarium pavilions will not be treated, and the animals in the outdoor aquariums will not be impacted during the process.
- The FAU marine lab building will not be treated.
- Once Gumbo Limbo Center reopens, will there be any lasting impacts we should worry about if we visit?
- According to the pest control company, there will be no residue or long-lasting impacts. The fumigant will be neutralized after the tenting period.
- What about the gift shop? Will everything be removed/replaced?
- All gift store merchandise will be covered and protected during this process.
- What areas will be closed?
- The front gate at Gumbo Limbo will be closed and locked closed beginning Sunday December 11th at sunset. The entirety of Gumbo Limbo Nature Center property, including the Nature Center, Aquariums, Sea Turtle Rehab, the butterfly garden, and the Ashley trail will be inaccessible to the public during this process.
- The Boardwalk will be open but accessible from Red Reef West only.
- What programs will be impacted?
- Beach Treasures, originally scheduled for December 13, will be rescheduled. Please check our website for an updated program schedule.
- Gumbo Limbo A’glow! Scheduled for December 16 at 6:00 will take place as scheduled.
